Proposal to lengthen the school day - consultation

5th February 2024

Friday 9 February 2024

Dear Parents and Carers of St George’s,

Re: Proposal to change the length of the school day

Consultation Letter

To ensure St George’s Catholic Primary School is meeting the Department for Education’s expectations re: the length of the school day and a child’s entitlement to 32.5 hours of teaching time per week, I am writing to inform you of a proposed change to the structure of the school day at St George’s Catholic Primary School increasing the school teaching day by 10 minutes per day.

Currently under discussion with our school governors is the following:

  • To change the beginning of the school day to 8.45am for registration (school gates to open at 8.30am)

Lengthening the school day will bring St George’s in line with revised government expectations that primary school children should be taught for 32.5 hours per week.

The consultation will run from 9 February 2024 to 9 March 2024. A consultation response form is available by request from the school office 0191 2675677.

We will share the outcome of the consultation and the decision of the school’s governors in March 2024.  If the proposal is agreed, the new school start time of 8.45am will begin on Tuesday 16 April 2024, after the Easter Holidays.

If you wish to discuss any of the above further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Mrs Anne Bullerwell

Executive Headteacher
