Spring 1 2026

Week beginning 9th February 2026

We’ve had another fun filled week in Early Years! This week, the sense we delved into was taste. We explored some different fruits, and discussed the way they tasted. We used some fabulous language including sour, juicy, sweet and bitter.

On Friday, we learned all about Luna/Chinese New Year. We made some dragons and lanterns, participated in a dragon celebration dance and tasted some traditional Chinese food.

Week beginning 2nd February 2026

This week Early Years have been exploring the sense of hearing. We have played games to guess the instrument, guessed the animal sound, and used our voices to make different sounds. We made our own shakers, by decorating bottles and filling them to make the sound we liked best.

We have enjoyed reading our new themed book ‘Funny Bones’. We like to identify the skeleton animals and think it’s funny when the skeletons struggle to put the dog back together properly.

We had a visit from our friends at the Healthworks who came to talk to us about tooth brushing and handwashing. We all had a turn at brushing ‘Tilly the Tooth’ and learned that we should brush our teeth twice a day, for 2 minutes, and we should spit but not rinse away the toothpaste on our teeth. We also used the hand washing machine to see how well we wash our hands. It showed us all of the germs on our hands after we had washed them to see if we had done a good enough job.

Reception helped to plan our end of unit Celebration of the Word for our Celebration topic. We chose which hymn we wanted to gather to, and decided we wanted to place candles on our focal point to represent Jesus as the ‘light of the world’.

Week beginning 26th January 2026

Early Years have been exploring the sense of smell this week. We have been smelling different scents, we recognised orange and ginger! We have discussed which smells we like and those we don’t.

On Wednesday, we brought our teddy bear and soft toy friends into school to meet our visitors from the Teddy Bear’s Hospital. These are Newcastle University students who help reduce health anxiety for children in an enjoyable way and raise awareness of improving general health. We explored some medical equipment - stethoscopes, blood pressure gauge and a pulse checker. We learned about the organs inside of our body, how important it is to brush our teeth, which foods are healthy or unhealthy and why. We joined in all of the activities and asked some sensible questions – we may have some future doctors in our class!

Week beginning 19th January 2026

In RE this week, Early Years have been learning the story of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. We role played Mary and Joseph taking Jesus to the Temple and Anna and Simeon’s reaction to seeing Him.

We have been exploring the sense of touch, describing how different toys and objects feel to us. We created our own ‘feely boxes’ to guess what the items were when we couldn’t see them, using touch alone.

We have been reading the book “Alan’s Big Scary Teeth” and taking part in tooth brushing activities. We have been brushing the small world animal and dinosaur’s teeth to practise our brushing skills.

Thank you to those parents who joined us for the Phonics Workshop on Wednesday. We were able to show off our fabulous phonic, reading and writing skills!

Week beginning 12th January 2026

In Early Years this week, we have been exploring the sense of sight. Playing different games, exploring what happens when we can’t see and what people can do to help them to see.

Nursery have been exploring the colour ‘red’ – identifying red around the rooms, finding red toys, and being creative with the colour red using lots of different materials.

Reception have been labelling body parts and writing about the Wolf.

We have also all made Wanted Posters to try and catch the wolf that tried to eat Little Red Riding Hood and her Grandma. Let us know if you see him!

Week beginning 5th January 2026

Happy New Year! Welcome back and welcome to our new Nursery friends and their families.

Our new topic this half term is Magnificent Me where we are exploring our body and senses. We have named body parts, drawn around ourselves to paint and collage, and sang songs, such as, Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.

Our new book is Little Red Riding Hood – we have loved re-enacting the story, taking turns at being the different characters and repeating the conversation Red Riding Hood and the Wolf have.

We also enjoyed playing in the snow and ice, wrapping up warm and exploring the different ways we could move it, use it or melt it.
